empower Energy and Peak Load Management

Peak Load Management

For customers with load metering, the energy consumption is continuously metered in ¼h steps. The maximum ¼h value of the year will be used as the factor for calculating the pricing for power. Typical power prices in Germany are approximately 50 € per kW and year. If the peak power value of a year is 200 kW, the annual power price is 10 000 EUR. By continuously checking the real time power consumption savings can be realized from utilizing dedicated, short switching techniques subsequently reducing the power of building loads such as air conditioning, compressors and heatings. Using the previous example, annual power peak may be reduced 20 to 25 %, resulting in annual savings of 2 000 to 2 500 €.

Particularly in the field of e-mobility, peak load management can avoid high costs due to the possible extremely high charging currents.

Self-Consumption Optimization

On sites with own power generation, e.g. thanks to photovoltaic systems, the embyt system is also ideally suited for self-consumption optimization, in addition to peak load regulation. If charging stations for e-cars are available, embyt can save energy costs by an optimal charging strategy.

System overview

System Overview

The system consists of a central PLC controller and other IO modules. The figure shows an example with 4 connected modules. The energy meter (S0 interface) is connected to their inputs, and the energy consumers (loads) to be controlled are connected to their outputs, usually via contactors. This system automatically performs the peak load regulation. The embyt control software runs on a standard PC connected via LAN or Internet with the controller. The PC software is used for parameterization and visualization, while the peak load regulation runs autonomously on the controller. The embyt control software can be installed on any number of PCs in parallel, accessing all data of load management.

Princple

Peak loads that are well above the average consumption arise often by chance, when many large energy loads are unnecessarily switched on simultaneously. Oftentimes, heaters may be turned off for a short time without a noticeable deficiency. Also air conditioning or compressors can be switched off for some time as the cold is stored for some time anyhow. Similarly, many other loads can be located, which may be reduced in consumption under certain conditions at peak loads. The difficulty is to identify these loads and define conditions under which these loads may be turned off.

Conditions View

With the embyt Energy Management System these conditions are programmed graphically, so the system is completely self-sufficient to make appropriate interruptions at peak loads. The programming is carried out via an intuitive graphical system, so that no knowledge is required that goes beyond the knowledge of a skilled electrician.

Regulation Monitor

With the PC software the energy use, load distribution and the costs may be evaluated in detail. For any irregularities the system automatically sends emails to one or more recipients.
